Kelsey Varzeas
THERAPIST
Kelsey A. Varzeas, Ph.D., CMPC, (she/her/hers) is a licensed mental health counselor associate (LMHCA) who aims to provide clients with a compassionate, warm, accepting, and collaborative space throughout their healing process. It is her hope to equip clients with daily practices to enrich and improve their quality of life.
Dr. Varzeas specializes in the treatment of eating disorders/disordered eating, body image dissatisfaction and disturbances, and the psychological risk factors and repercussions of Low Energy Availability (LEA) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) with those who identify as athletes. In her work, she acknowledges the unique social, cultural, physical, and mental stressors that athletes face as compared to their non-athlete peers.
Dr. Varzeas focuses her subspecialty on women’s mental health treating women ranging from adolescents to adulthood who are navigating eating disorders/disordered eating and body image concerns related to reproduction, pregnancy, and/or postpartum. With both populations, Dr. Varzeas is trained to provide support in the areas of interpersonal relationships, stress management, self-worth, exercise dependence, generalized anxiety, and well-being.
Using an integrative approach to address each client’s unique needs, Dr. Varzeas weaves together components of narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and Health at Every Size® (HAES) principles. She strongly believes in the importance of continually reflecting upon and challenging structural inequalities around social justice issues and how these issues shape an individual’s story.
Dr. Varzeas completed her postdoctoral training at Pennington Biomedical Research Center’s Behavior Technology Laboratory, her Ph.D. at The Ohio State University, and her M.Ed. at Boston University. Additionally, she holds the designation of a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC), which demonstrates the highest standards of professional practice for sport and performance psychology consultants. Dr. Varzeas is receiving supervision from Rebekah Bardwell Doweyko to become a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS).
Outside of her professional, scholarly, and clinical lives, you will most certainly find Dr. Varzeas in the outdoors. As a nature lover, she finds great pleasure expressing herself through downhill skiing, hiking, running, and other active pursuits. She honors the importance of rest and recovery through reading, laughing, and frequenting farmer’s markets.
